Depression NICE Guidelines: Overview and Recommendations
The Depression NICE Guidelines address the identification, treatment, and management of depression in individuals aged 18 and over. These guidelines offer insights into treatments for initial episodes of depression, subsequent treatments, and strategies for preventing relapse. They also delve into managing chronic depression, psychotic depression, and depression coexisting with a personality disorder diagnosis.
NICE has further extended its focus by producing a guideline on depression in adults who also have a chronic physical health issue.
Key Recommendations in the Depression NICE Guidelines:
- Principles of care for depression.
- Recognizing and assessing depression.
- Choices in treatment delivery.
- Treatments for initial episodes of less severe and more severe depression.
- Behavioral couples therapy for depression.
- Strategies to prevent relapse.
- Further-line treatments.
- Addressing chronic depressive symptoms.
- Managing depression in individuals diagnosed with a personality disorder.
- Approaches to psychotic depression.
- Techniques like electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, and implanted vagus nerve stimulation.

For a comprehensive understanding, visual summaries are available on the Depression NICE Guidelines website, detailing treatments for varying severity levels, relapse prevention, and more.
Intended Audience of the Depression NICE Guidelines:

- Other professionals interacting with or providing services to individuals with depression.
- Commissioners and service providers for those with depression.
- Individuals with depression, along with their families and caregivers.
Depression NICE Guidelines Development & Updates:
The process of how NICE guidelines are developed is transparent and rigorous. The current Depression NICE Guidelines replace the NICE guideline CG90 from October 2009, which was formerly titled “depression in adults: recognition and management.”
Professional Responsibility and Application:
The Depression NICE Guidelines reflect NICE’s perspective, formulated after thorough evaluation of available evidence. While professionals are encouraged to consider these guidelines, they should also respect individual needs and circumstances. The guidelines are not obligatory and don’t supersede the professional’s duty to make informed decisions in collaboration with the patient and their caregivers.
All issues related to treatments or procedures should be reported to the appropriate regulatory bodies. Local healthcare commissioners and providers are tasked with facilitating the application of these guidelines, keeping in mind local and national priorities, and ensuring no discrimination, promoting equality, and addressing health disparities.
Lastly, in line with the Depression NICE Guidelines, commissioners and providers should strive for an eco-friendly health and care system, evaluating and minimizing the environmental impact of implementing NICE’s recommendations.
