About the SLaM Recovery College:

SLaM Recovery College:

Who the college is for?

N.B. This was the criteria we applied back when we were running face-to-face sessions. Our current online offer of webinars is available to to anyone, anywhere, free of charge.
Recovery is about people with mental health difficulties having the same opportunities in life as everyone else. It is about a personal journey towards a meaningful and satisfying life. It is about hope, control and opportunity. It is about living as well as possible. The workshops and courses we run aim to provide the tools to make this happen, to help you become an expert in your own recovery or that of someone you care for or work with.

Our college offers a learning approach that complements the existing services provided by the Trust. :Every course and workshop we offer is co-designed and co-run by trainers with lived experience working alongside trainers from the mental health professions.  Our webinars are free of charge and available to anybody, anywhere. Our classroom-based courses are free of charge and open to:

  • People who use SLaM services
  • Supporters (carers, family and friends) of SLaM’s service users
  • People who have been discharged from SLaM services within the last six months and their supporters
  • Anyone working with SLaM as a volunteer or peer supporter or who is on the SLaM Involvement Register
  • SLaM staff (not including students on clinical placement)

A referral from a clinician or service isn’t required to enrol at the college.  As a student, you can choose which courses interest you or suit your needs.

All we’d ask is that, if you do put your name down for a course, you make every effort to attend. Places for all our courses are in high demand so if you can’t attend for any reason please contact the Recovery College office as soon as possible so your place can be offered to someone on the waiting list.

Please note that you also need to be aged 16 or over to come to any of our courses.

a film about the college

This is a short film about the work of our college. We hope that after watching it you will have some inkling of the passion and commitment of our staff and trainers. But, more importantly, we hope that it will give you an idea of the positive impact the college is having on the lives of our students. It was shot and directed by Steven Tart and edited by Belal Ladkani. Many thanks to everyone who took part in the making of the film.

a film about the tree of life

For over 2 years, a service user co-led workshop project called the Tree of Life was run on SLAM’s adult acute in-patient wards.  Over that period the workshops were attended by over 650 service users, and nearly 300 members of staff helped to create the ‘Forest of Life’ in SLAM. In 2015 the project won a national mental health award for ‘equality and diversity in service provision ‘and a highly commended for ‘patient experience’.

This film celebrates the co-production values, and commitment to providing compassionate care, that are at the heart of the Tree of Life project.
The Tree of Life Team also run workshops as part of the college’s curriculum, and Dr Julie Fraser, the Lead for the Tree of Life workshops, can be heard in the Radio 4 All in the Mind segment that you can listen to below.

a film about our comedy school improvisation course

We are now able to offer two fantastic courses from the Comedy School, thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, one focused on Improvisation and one on Stand Up. This film was recorded at the Ritzy in Brixton, where students from our very first Improvisation course performed before an enthusiastic audience.
