BPD NICE Guidelines Summary

The BPD NICE Guidelines cover the recognition and management of borderline personality disorder (BPD). The primary objective of these guidelines is to assist individuals with BPD in managing feelings of distress, anxiety, worthlessness, and anger. Furthermore, they aim to help these individuals maintain stable and close relationships with others.

In April 2022, a significant update was noted: The latest revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) has ceased to distinguish the previously separate types of personality disorders. Instead, it defines personality disorder as a singular condition, categorized by its severity. Notably, the new classification does not recognize borderline personality disorder as an independent condition. In light of this, there is an ongoing exploration to determine whether the existing BPD NICE Guidelines recommendations can be adjusted to align with ICD-11 or if there’s a need to retract this guideline altogether.

Recommendations:

The BPD NICE Guidelines encompass recommendations pertinent to:

Who Is It For?

  • Healthcare professionals
  • People diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, along with their families and caregivers.

Is This Guideline Up To Date? As of July 2018, the BPD NICE Guidelines were reviewed, and no new evidence was found that would necessitate changes to the existing recommendations.

Guideline Development Process: The process of how NICE guidelines are formulated is transparent and rigorous. It’s worth noting that this guideline was formerly titled “borderline personality disorder: treatment and management.”
