Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)
Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT):
What is MINT?
The Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) is a global network of trainers specialising in motivational interviewing. Registered as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit charitable organisation in Virginia, USA, MINT brings together trainers from a wide range of backgrounds to apply motivational interviewing (MI) in various settings. Their primary focus is on enhancing the quality and effectiveness of counselling and consultations aimed at behavioural change. Initiated in 1997 by a group of trainers mentored by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, MINT has expanded to include members from 40 countries, communicating in over 30 languages.
What is MINT’s Mission?
MINT’s mission centres around advancing best practices in the application, research, and training of motivational interviewing. It fosters continuous learning and expertise among its members through meetings, the open exchange of resources, communication, publications, and collaborative practice opportunities. MINT is dedicated to promoting high-quality applications of motivational interviewing across different cultures, languages, and contexts, rather than constraining or governing its practice and training.
Four Foundational Values of MINT
MINT’s principles are anchored in four key values:
- Quality: Commitment to excellence, reliability, ethical conduct, integrity, professionalism, and adapting to new evidence.
- Openness: A dedication to continuous evolution, open-mindedness, innovation, flexibility, boundary expansion, growth, humility, curiosity, and self-reflection.
- Generosity: A culture of non-possessiveness, sharing, recognition, collaboration, cooperation, and contributing more than one receives.
- Respect: A deep appreciation for individual and professional diversity, international perspectives, kindness, effective listening, communication, and egalitarian principles.
